Response From Potential Retailers - Including EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Thanks for your email.
The idea is interesting and fits in with our preference to provide groceries in bulk to customers for self-service. We encourage customers to bring their own containers but do also provide paper bags.
We however do not stock pet foods. One reason for this is that there are potential issues of contamination between pet foods and foods for human consumption where such products are sold in the same shop space, particularly in self-service situations. While our Food Control Plan could no doubt be amended to accommodate this, there would be considerable expense in doing so.
We therefore do not plan to sell bulk pet food in our store for self-service at this time, however we would consider supplying customers to order with pre-packaged bulk supplies.

The Team at NOC

Note: if we could ensure the pet food was to the standard of human food this could still work.

Hello Kittykai team!
Fantastic idea! Of course, we love that it will be locally sourced and organic/free range.
So to explain what we do - our team buys much of our stock in bulk and bag it down ourselves, but using compostable cellophane or paper bags. Eco friendly.
Look forward to hearing from you again with any updates. Would definitely look to stocking this.
Warmest regards
Karen

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in Liberty Market. Your proposed new product sounds exciting. We are always happy to see new products that benefit the environment and cater to customers' needs. Though we can't predict the future success of any one product, we encourage all potential new vendors to develop their ideas into product and bring to market. Once you have a product ready for sale we are more than happy to consider stocking it.
Kind regards,
Kerry

Hi Ashley,
This is a FANTASTIC idea! I was just thinking the other day about how much waste is caused by pet food. We do not stock pet foods in our shop, however, if this was supplied at Animates and/or supermarkets we would definitely buy it. Especially if it is local, organic and free range ingredients!
We wish you all the best in this venture and hope it really takes off!!
Kindest regards,
Orléa Rayne

Hi,
We are a vegetarian store and so won't be able to stock anything containing meat or fish. But if it is organic our other stores in Auckland, Huckleberry stores, would possibly stock it but you would have to make sure the ingredients are high quality and organic and it would have to be showcased to the product manager via entering it into their RangeMe which is on their website.
Kind regards,

Hi there, the idea of a dry food diet in bulk bins could work well, however I could see some weaknesses in the case of keeping the food as fresh as bulk bins are usually not air tight - thus severely lessening the shelf life of any high quality dry diet.
Also in the the case of single serve foods these are generally all wet diets so you would find it very smelly if nothing else in your stores.
A recyclable packaging proposal may be a more efficient way to go.
Thanks and good luck with your paper - Vee

Notes: We would definitely need to keep the bulk bins airtight, but that likely won't be a huge issue as a lot of things are sold in bulk bins already. The respondee didn't understand that the dehydrated food gets rehydrated, which I think shows a need for marketing to educate consumers, and indeed retailers, about dehydrated pet food. Lastly, the issue we are trying to solve is not just wasteful packaging, but single use packaging. Ultimately we want to consumers to use reusable containers to drastically reduce their footprint, not just use recyclable or compostable packaging.
