We are a team of Massey University Design Researchers who have identified a massive waste issue within the New Zealand pet food industry of single serve and single use cat food packaging.

For our paper we have to produce a viable business idea to pitch to industry experts, and we have come up with the following proposal to combat our identified issue.

Our proposal is to become a new New Zealand pet food company who produces nutritious dehydrated cat food made with ingredients sourced from local, organic, free range farms. Our point of difference is our lack of unsustainable packaging as our cat food will be available for purchase nationally in our bulk bins at organic grocery stores. Customers bring their own reusable containers to fill from the bulk bins, thus helping to combat the issue of pet food packaging waste and tying into the zero waste and buying local trends. As a safe guard we would also provide the retailer with either recyclable brown paper bags or recyclable unbleached kraft paperboard boxes for those customers who forget to bring containers.

This is all speculative, but we need expressions of interest of our idea from possible retailers who would stock our cat food to validate this project to our supervisors and show that our idea has interested parties. An expression of interest letting us know whether this self-serve product idea has potential and is worth developing would be very much appreciated and would not obligate you to stock this product.
