Formative Pitch Feedback/Notes

Image
The panel of investors (teachers) really liked our idea and our problem space but we still aren't quite there with our proposed execution of our system. There is a clear problem and reusable packaging is the way to go but the system needs to be cheap to be viable - it's too much to ask investors to buy into without truely knowing if it will work (not having a pilot). Could customers fill their own jars from a bin of cat food in-store - taking out the huge cost of continuously transporting jars back and forth from a pet food company? Is this viable from a health and safety perspective? Do we go smaller and have it bring your own jar or do we expand and try to revolutionize the entire packaging system in NZ?

Week 6 Pitch

[Slide 1] Hi I'm Sam and this is Georgia, Sarah, Ashley, and Wairata. We’re The Feline Food Loop and we’re revolutionising the current wasteful system of buying cat food. 1.6 million New Zealanders own at least one cat. If even a quarter of these cats are fed one single serve meal a day, this would send 146 million pieces of non-biodegradable waste to landfill each year! This is not sustainable. [Slide 2] We’ve spoken to a number of eco-conscious Wellington cat owners and there is a clear trend of people wanting a more sustainable alternative to plastic or aluminium packaging. Our business will provide reusable jars of wet cat food for people to purchase at organic food stores, and offer a monetary rebate or discount on the next purchase when the jars are returned. [Slide 3] This closed loop 'deposit return' system is a process designed to financially incentivise people to return empty packaging so it can be reused - adding value to something that is normally percei...

Is Glass The Way To Go?

While discussing our project, the question, "Is glass really the most sustainable?" was posed. Currently in packaging wet products the main options are glass, aluminium cans and plastics. The main point of our service is that the containers are reusable first and foremost and can eventually be recycled if need be. Eliminating the need to recycle the containers eliminates a chunk of energy consumption, but there's the potential that the weight of the glass will make the energy costs of transportation higher than the recycling of aluminium. Plastic is not ideal because it has to be transported overseas to be recycled and is a difficult material to recycle without degradation. Some research has found that reusable glass bottles are in fact more sustainable than aluminium cans. There's also the ease of use of glass containers to consider. Aluminium cans can have sharp edges and food should not be stored in them after opening as it can taint the food. This means that f...

Ethical Pet Food Brands

https://harringtonspetfood.co.nz/pages/why-harringtons-1 Wherever possible Harringtons actively work to reduce its carbon footprint and environmental impact. At every step of the manufacturing process, from procurement of raw ingredients to consideration of end user, all environmental aspects are monitored and controlled. Where possible, they use raw ingredients that are sourced locally, reducing the energy consumption by transportation, coupled with the aim of supporting the local community and local businesses. They have designed a compostable bag which is suitable for some products, and aim to limit the use of excess packaging. All packaging is recyclable (where facilities exist). The compostable bag (certified to European Standard EN13432) can be composted either in your own compost pile or through an industrial composting process. The big bags (15kg) are 100% recyclable and can be disposed of through your local authority recycling collection, either through your home recycli...
