Week 4 Elevator Pitch

Our big idea is a social enterprise making cat toys and accessories out of a textile waste stream with a percentage of the proceeds going to cat-related charities.

Cats are the most popular companion animal in New Zealand, with 45% of New Zealanders owning at least one cat. The current movement towards small families means cats are increasingly being treated like family members, leading to a culture of 'pet-parenting'.

New Zealand's pet industry is estimated to be worth 1.8 billion per year. In 2015 alone New Zealanders spent 7.74 million on their cats. Up to a quarter of all pet spending is on accessories and, as more people become environmentally aware, eco-friendly products are becoming a profitable section of the market.

We are interested in tapping into these current pet-parenting and eco-friendly trends and producing sustainable, durable, stylish, and enjoyable cat toys and accessories.

We currently have free access to local business Thunderpants' pre-consumer textile waste, which is approximately 30kg every two months. This waste would get our business started, but if demand for our product increased we would need to source more.

Consumers 'buying local' is an increasing trend as it is becoming more popular to support the local economy. This idea of doing something good for the community is also reflected in the charitable aspect of our big idea as consumers will feel good about supporting animal welfare charities working in their area, whilst also proving their pet cat with an enjoyable new toy or accessory.
