Talking To People At Organic Supermarkets

Commonsense Organics Notes:

People in Commonsense organics were more likely to be really passionate about environmentally friendly things and avoiding plastics.

Staff member:
- People often ask us if we stock a range of pet related items.
- The organic cat food is super popular, and is all currently sold out.
- Common sense organics don't sell pet toys.

Person 1:
- They want environmentally and pet friendly flea drops or medication.
- They try to have a plastic free household. This is challenging with a pet as tins have plastic coated labels and cat biscuits come in large plastic bags.
- They usually make their own cat toys e.g, boxes, toilet paper rolls or string.

Person 2:
- They make their own cat food (fully meat)
- Use tea tree oil to flea the cat.
- They bought it a cat castle (large play equipment)
- They want "true primal cat food" (all meat), or holistic or natural de worming and flea-ing products.
- They don't really buy the cat toys as they can make them.

Person 3:
- They are concerned about the flea treatment for cats being very chemical.
- They feed their cat meat.

Person 4:
- Don't buy their cat toys, they use paper, wool, tubes etc to play with.
- They try to avoid plastic, but find it very hard- would like some alternatives.
- The cat eats the family's scraps e.g. meat and veggies.

Person 5:
- Makes their own chicken stock for their cat.

Person 6:
- Only buys their cat food, not toys as their cat finds things to play with in the environment.

Moore Wilsons Notes:

People in Moore Wilsons were much more likely to state that they didn't really consider the eco friendliness of the products that they bought for their pet. Also, we found a lot of people we stopped to ask didn't end up having a pet - although perhaps this was just because we asked more people in Moore Wilsons.

Person 1:
- Buys their cat biscuits.
- Hates that the toys are all "shitty and plastic"
- Eco friendly toys are "like $50 for one mouse"
- Cat litter is filled with chemicals and bad.

Person 2:
- Cat bowls are bad plastic, and it is really hard to find one that is low and wide enough to fit the cats face and whiskers in.

Person 3:
(Has a dog)
- Feeds their dog an all raw diet.
- Purchases eco bowls and dog food bags.
- Uses natural pet cleaning products such as shampoo.

Person 4:
(Has a dog)
- Usually steers towards natural looking products.
- Makes olive oil at home and her dog eats a lot of that.
- Checks if the biscuits and meat she buys is eco friendly before buying.
- Avoids buying kangaroo based products for her dog to eat "because its bad"

Person 5:
(Has a dog)
- Buys local NZ made biscuits

Person 6:
- The only things they buy their cat is food and the occasional toy with catnip in.

Person 7:
(Has a dog)
- Finds it hard to know whats in the dog food you buy.
- The dogs bedding is usually his cast offs.

Person 8:
- Worried that there aren't options for eco friendly cat food.

Person 9:
- Their cat won't eat anything from the supermarket or pet shop.
- They want a food source that is healthier for their cat.

Reflection

Today was a very helpful exercise as it helped us connect with our audience and find out through direct conversation with them what they need/the problems they face/the concerns they have etc. The eco-friendliness of pet toys did come up in a few conversations, but lots of cat owners said they either make their own or just don't buy any.

New Opportunities: Pet food, pet food packaging, natural flea treatment, pet bowls.
