Our big idea is a social enterprise making small animal accessories out of a textile waste stream with a percentage of the proceeds going to animal charities.
58% of New Zealand households own at least one pet animal, with the market shifting towards small pets over larger pets due to urbanisation. Also, the movement towards small families has led to pets being treated like family members.
New Zealand's pet industry is estimated to be worth 1.8 billion per year. Up to a quarter of this is spent on accessories and, as more people become environmentally aware, eco-friendly pet products are becoming a profitable section of the market.
We are interested in tapping into these current pet-parenting and eco-friendly trends and producing sustainable, durable, stylish, and enjoyable pet accessories.
We currently have free access to local business Thunderpants' pre-consumer textile waste which is approximately 30kg every two months. This waste would get our business started, but if demand for our product increased we would need to source more.
